It's no secret that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ruffled feathers within the royal institution. Allegedly, even the late Queen had expressed her doubts about Markle’s inability to adjust to royal life. Author Lady Colin Campbell revealed that the Prince once told Queen Elizabeth to ‘suck it up’ after she expressed doubts about his future bride.
Campbell claimed that a friend of the Queen told her about the tense interaction between the late monarch and her grandson. As per the Daily Record, Campbell, on The Scandal Mongers podcast, said, "The Queen tried to intervene and he told her that if she didn't allow the marriage she would be accused of racism and would have to suck it up.” The writer also alleged that Prince Philip told Harry, “We do not marry actresses, we 'step out' with them.”
Campbell claims that while the late Queen had never heard the phrase before, she ‘instantly understood’ what it meant. The writer explained, “There were tremendous concerns as to her suitability as an individual and to her attitude and her modes of expression and behavior.” Doubling down on her claims, the writer alleged that the Queen's objections had nothing to do with Markle’s race, but with the former actress herself. She cited, “There were two reasons the Queen allowed the marriage. The main reason was that Meghan was a woman of color…The second reason they agreed to the marriage was because Meghan could control Harry, who up until then had been totally uncontrollable.”
Campbell, in her controversial book Meghan and Harry: The Real Story, noted that it was very unusual for Harry to explode at his family, particularly his grandparents. She reasoned, “He had never behaved like that to his grandparents before, where his volcanic side just spewed forth, but it certainly happened in this instance, I was told.”
Harry is reported to have had many outbursts over his family’s objection to Markle. In his memoir, Spare, he revealed that he once scolded his father, King Charles III, when he ‘banned’ Markle from seeing the dying Queen. As reported by The Mirror, he penned, “He started to lay out his reason, which was nonsensical and disrespectful.” Harry revealed that he warned his father and said, “Don't ever speak about my wife that way." Sharing also Charles' reaction, he added, "He stammered, apologetic, saying he simply didn't want a lot of people around. No other wives were coming, Kate wasn't coming, he said, therefore Meg shouldn't.” Charles, later, reportedly, insisted on inviting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to join the Waleses in the tribute walkabout at the Queen’s memorial service.
