William's 'Awkward' Conversation with Andrew at Funeral Revealed by Lip Reader — and It's Embarrassing

In the video footage, William is seen glancing at his uncle before fixing his gaze firmly ahead, rubbing his nose, and rocking gently on his heels.

Prince Andrew was the talk of the town at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral, as he stepped back into the royal spotlight after days of keeping a low profile. As videos of the outing made the rounds on social media, a lip reader has revealed exactly what was said.

While the service itself was dignified, the mood shifted once the family stepped outside Westminster Cathedral. Andrew’s presence drew attention less for the fact that he was there and more for how others reacted to him. Senior royals seemed careful to keep their distance, and Prince William, in particular, looked as though he would rather be anywhere else. His jaw was tight, his posture stiff, and his expression said more than words ever could, as per the Daily Mail

The awkwardness only deepened when Andrew attempted to strike up a conversation with his nephew. In the video footage, William glanced at him before fixing his gaze firmly ahead, rubbing his nose and rocking gently on his heels. His expression suggested this was not a conversation he wanted to prolong. Lip reader Jacqui Press told the Daily Mail she had studied the footage closely and deciphered Andrew’s attempts at small talk. His words, she claimed, were as neutral as possible. He allegedly said, “It was a beautiful service,” before making the quintessential British observation, “Aren’t we lucky with the weather today?”

Andrew’s appearance at royal events is no longer straightforward. Since stepping back from public duties following his controversial association with Jeffrey Epstein, he has largely been kept out of the spotlight, for senior royals such as William and even King Charles himself, being seen engaging too warmly with Andrew carries its own risks.

At the memorial on Tuesday, Andrew lingered at the cathedral doorway as the rest of the party moved ahead to say their goodbyes. The optics were difficult to miss: while others blended naturally into the solemn procession, the Duke of York appeared slightly adrift. Still, Andrew wasn’t entirely without company. Press also claimed he exchanged a few words with his sister, Princess Anne. At one point, the Princess Royal was seen gesturing to her brother, reportedly saying, “Let’s walk this way.” Later, Andrew appeared to ask, “Shall [we] go that way and we can leave there?”

As for William, it is only fair that the heir apparent would choose to keep his distance, given the recent tensions. Andrew has once again become a source of embarrassment for the royal family. On September 4, U.S. Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace openly called for his criminal prosecution, echoing protests from Jeffrey Epstein’s victims and drawing fresh attention to a scandal the royals had hoped was behind them.

For Charles, the timing couldn't be worse. With Donald and Melania Trump in the UK for a state visit, Andrew’s name in the headlines was the last thing the Palace needed. Page Six reported that Charles has been left embarrassed by the controversy and is determined to keep the focus on maintaining the UK’s relationship with Washington. Andrew, unsurprisingly, was not on the guest list for the state banquet.
